Arantzazu is a truly unforgettable place. Nature, culture and spirit combine in an amazing way in this beautiful spot. Away from one's busy everyday life and hectic working schedule it is an excellent meeting point and place to relax.

The history of Arantzazu goes back to 1468. That year Rodrigo of Baltzategi chanced upon an image of Our Lady. Brimming with faith people then began to make pilgrimages to the spot. A small chapel was built and a Shrine created, the House of Mary.

In 1499, after the time of the "Seroras" or female sacristans and other keepers, the Franciscans arrived at Arantzazu and it is they who have been keeping watch over the house of Our Lady up until the present day.

  • In 1553 and in 1622 Arantzazu was destroyed by fire, but rebuiltthrough the faith of the Basques.
  • In 1834 Arantzazu was razed to the ground by the army of the Liberals during the 1st Carlist War.
  • 19th October, 1846, saw the dedication of a new church.
  • On 17th September, 1878, the Franciscan religious order returned to the shrine.
  • In 1886 the image of Mary was crowned Queen.
  • In 1955 the new Basilica was dedicated and consecrated.
  • In 2001 the Franciscans had been in Arantzazu for 500 years watching over the house of Our Lady. That year marked the start of important renovation and reorganisation work in the environs of the basilica.

The building of the Gandiaga Centre is one of the consequences of this reorganisation. In this modern, innovative building the aim is to create a space for unfettered dialogue..

This booklet provides information on the infrastructure and services that the Gandiaga Centre has to offer.
